Night Driving Tips

Night Driving Tips

All things being equal, I definitely prefer driving in the day to driving at night. Turns out, that's not just my internal grandmother - there are actual statistics to back me up. Only 25% of driving takes place at night, but over 55% of accidents happen when the sun goes down.

Safety Tips:

1.       Always make sure your headlights, taillights and windows are clear, clean and working well.

2.       Make sure your headlights are properly aimed. Misaimed headlights can make it harder for you to see the road, as well as being a hazard to other drivers who may be blinded by lights that are in their field of vision.

3.       Turn your headlights on at dusk. You may not think you need them to see yet, but they'll help other drivers see you.

4.       Never "overdrive" your headlights. If you aren't able to safely stop within the lighted area, you're at risk of hitting something out of your field of vision. Adjust accordingly.

5.       Increase your following distance.

6.       Keep on top of your vision. The older you get, the more often you'll need to get your vision checked.

7.       Stay alert. Sip something cold (some people need a little caffeine and/or sugar). Have a conversation with your passenger, or even your phone on speaker. Play music, adjust the temperature, crack the window, sniff scents that wake you up. Be aware and pull over if necessary.

You can't avoid it - things end after the sun goes down and you have to get home. But just being aware can help you stay safe!
